I had a lot to do today, planning a trip back east that starts tomorrow. And... I went to the juan. Fishing was lights out from sunup until I left, eggs, midges, at the end I started using a black streamer (that I found in a fish that I caught) and jigglin it around. Amazing day. The crowds got ridiculous and the etiquette is kinda effed. Buncha fat old rich guys pull up in their Hummers belch and fart their way across the river and then walk right up next to you and start casting without a word. Call me crazy, but I'll take the Animas ANY day.

We had a blast fishing over at Chad's place. I dunno if my reflexes were a little dull from a fun night last night, but I hooked but lost 4 fish and caught 1. Tiny midge under an egg again. There was a big brown under the rock who I got to take the midge but I was toooooo slow and only had him on the hook for a couple seconds. That's a great stretch of water.

We were among the first people in the braids and I think that had a big effect on the quality of the fish we caught. A lot of big fish and they were biting on eggs like crazy. They were also biting small midges. I lost count of how many fish we caught, and big ones too! Simon canyon was slow on the surface activity and my favorite kiddie pool eddy wasn't producing much either apart from a 16" rainbow that took me for an amusing ride. Amazing day! Thanks to Travis from Fly Fish The San Juans for showing me the ropes on this crowded but really fun river.

I've always wanted to stop at the park in Bayfield and try a few casts. My good friend Paul gave me the tour but the water was very low, moving fast and clear as a bell. I didn't see any deep pools in the short time there. I imagine that in the spring and summer the dry fly fishing could be good there. Although I didn't catch a thing or see a fish, I'll go back another time and fish the area thoroughly. Cheers.

Brrrrr. Fishing in a blizzard! It was very cold and wet, but I fished from about 1:30 until 5 at Basin Creek and Conglamorate Rock. I fished at the spot on the east bank where I caught the brown a few posts down. It's about 15-20 feet downriver from the juniper tree (you'll see it) I caught several pretty but small rainbows, in the 10-14" range. I went downriver and fished the first two structures I came to with no strikes. I used size 24 midges, cream color, they worked great. I used a pink and then cream colored egg on top. I caught one more smaller rainbow on the west side of the same area when I was leaving. At Conglamorate Rock, I didn't see my indicator move and it was really really cold.

Off the hook. Which is how I describe several on the monsters I had on the hook, but all in all we all landed nice fish and had a great day. In the afternoon we went to Simon Canyon to check the BWO hatch but nada. Fish were rising to tiny midgest, but I didn't have anything to imitate them. I used tiny midge pupa fished lower and landed some nice fish. PS... the fish on the san juan like eggs this time of year.
