Vallecito Report 3/31/2012

We watched the ice go from 20 feet from the shore to 100 feet. You could literally hear the ice melting. Fishing was pretty good on black jigs. Anabelle does not like hanging out on rip rap all day, who can blame her. The fish were all 10-15" rainbows, nothing impressive, one really weird little fish that was fat at the top with a skinny tail. I've known some ladies who looked like that, mostly due to potato chips.

Totten Reservoir, Summit Res, Joe Moore

We went and rode bikes over at Phil's world by Cortez so it seemed a natural time to hit Totten up and try to catch a walleye. No such luck but Lisa caught a single pike. We then headed over to Summit Reservoir where there was a really good trumpet player in the outhouse jammin like a mofo. I'm dead serious. A guy was in the outhouse playing the trumpet and he was playing well. I almost went and knocked on the door telling him I needed to use the outhouse but if he was willing, he could serenade my poo. Shoulda coulda. There were some total derelicts drinking down by the lake and being fairly obnoxious but we fished a bit to no avail. We headed over to Joe Moore and threw a few casts and who should show up? The poophouse virtuoso? NO! The f$%#ing derelicts. Maybe I sound judgmental not knowing them and all, but this wasn't the humanity that cured Polio and went to the moon. Oh well. An almost fishless day but killer bike ride great views and a beautiful day with a beautiful chica... could be worse. WTF was that guy doing playing his trumpet in the outhouse? Do you know this man? Please comment!

Pastorius

Fishin after skiing. 1 rainbow. It was slow. Wading in that lake is downright gross.

Puett Pike

30 feet of water between ice and ground. Kastmasters and Rapalas were landing pike. Didn't see any walleye. Joe Moore was completely frozen and the La Plata didn't give up any brookies but is accessible.

Ice!

There's still ice on Vallecito and Lemon. The inlets to both have some water but didn't produce anything for us. The Animas is over 500cfs and brown. I don't think I'd trust the ice very much along the edges it's getting there.

Pastorius

The ice is gone, the water is low and cloudy. Nice fish around the dam on gold kastmasters. Smells a bit but it sure beats workin. One larger Rainbow was plopping out eggs, however, I don't think there is any chance of reproduction in Pastorius. Correct me if I'm wrong, the comments box is just below.

San Juan

The top section right at the dam was fishing slow in the morning but heated up when the sun poked out of the clouds. Fish were taking little black midges, and some real impressive mammas. It wasn't crowded and proved to be a great day.

Ice Report

Pastorious is frozen with all but a little water near the boat ramp covered. Vallecito is 100% frozen. Lemon is 100% frozen. Let's go back inside and drink beer and play cards.

San Juan

My ski pass was blacked out for spring break so I headed down for some mid week fishing. Turns out it's spring break on the Juan too! It was crowded but I caught my biggest fish ever (again) up by the cable hole area. Little old fashioned black midge with a gold rib in size 24 was gold up there, where some of the more exact looking imitations weren't. A guy fishing next to me was doing quite well using scuds. The more fish you catch down there the less you notice the enormous crowd.

Nice day to be on the river...

Chad and I both lost nice ones today, but it didn't take away from what was a gorgeous day on the water. The wind was ridiculous and sure that makes casting tough, but with a little water weighting and a little patience it's not so bad. The water was off color quite a bit with just a few feet of visibility at best. According to the reading on Fly Fish The San Juans' website, the Animas is flowing at a little over 200cfs. Lightner creek seems to be chubbin some mud. The fishing wasn't lights out for me today but any action is better than no action, right?
